Viagra vs Cialis, Levitra and Spedra

Viagra vs Cialis, Levitra and Spedra

At the ripe old age of 20, Viagra might be the oldest and the best known, but nowadays there are several types of medication available to treat erectile dysfunction (ED). These medicines are known as PDE5 inhibitors, and work by relaxing blood vessels in the penis to allow blood to flow more easily, which helps you to get an erection. Cialis, Levitra, Spedra and Viagra each have their own uniquenesses, so read on to find out which one is most suited to you.

Brand vs Generic

Sometimes you’ll see ED medications sold under two different names: the branded one (Viagra) and the generic one. You might also see the medication referred to as different brand names, which are usually what they’re sold as in different countries.

There is absolutely no chemical difference between a branded and a generic medicine. But there’s usually a difference in price. This is purely because you’re paying for the name. It’s just like buying Heinz beans instead of own brand beans, as most people have heard of Viagra, but less people have know was Sildenafil is. What if I told you… these are exactly the same medicine, with the exact same active ingredient?

When Viagra was created by Pfizer, they put a patent on it so only they could sell the medicine. Viagra, as with most new medicines, was relatively expensive when it was first brought out, as Pfizer had put years and a lot of money into researching and developing it and needed to make back those costs.

When their patent expired, it became possible to buy the generic version, Sildenafil, for less money, as companies could just copy Pfizer’s medicine without investing their own money into research.

Cialis (also sold under its generic name, Tadalafil)

Cialis is one the more popular alternatives to Viagra, and it comes in a form that its competitors don’t: a daily tablet. With Cialis Daily, you take a small dose (5mg - a typical one off dose would usually be 10mg) at the same time each day, making it easier to get an erection throughout the day. This makes it a pretty expensive option.

Cialis Daily is the ideal solution for men who expect to be having sex two or more nights a week, or if you’re more inclined to have spontaneous sex with your partner(s) and would rather not have to wait for a tablet to take effect. However, if you do take a one off dose, its effects can last for up to 36 hours - longer than most ED medicines.

Levitra

Levitra contains the active ingredient vardenafil, but it isn’t available to buy as a generic medication yet in the UK. There is evidence to suggest that Levitra is more effective among people who have diabetes. You might have heard of Levitra referred to under the name Staxyn, which is the exact same medicine but as a tablet which melts on your tongue. This is useful if you have difficulty swallowing tablets. Although the brand Staxyn isn’t available in the UK, you can buy Levitra orodispersible tablets which are the same.

Spedra (also sold under its generic name, Avanafil)

Spedra is one of the newest ED medicines to be approved, and it was designed with the purpose of giving patients less side effects, as well as having a quicker effect than its competitors. You may also see it sold as Stendra, although this brand is most usually sold in America. Spedra usually takes effect after 15-30 minutes, which is notably quicker than Viagra, Cialis and Levitra.

Viagra (also sold as Viagra Connect and Sildenafil)

This was the first ED medicine to hit the market, and is now over 20 years old. It’s also sold under its generic name of Sildenafil for less money since its patent expired. Unlike any other ED medicine, Viagra is available over the counter under the name Viagra Connect. This means you don’t need a prescription to buy it.

If you know how much you’re going to need each month, you can even buy it on a subscription from an online service such as Eddie, delivered by Well Pharmacy. It’s the easiest and most discreet way to get help for ED.
